Dear Elected Official or Agency Decision Maker,

Please protect the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Stop the Trump Administration from unlawfully granting federal mineral leases to Antofagasta, a foreign mining company.

The Trump Administration is rushing to ruin the Boundary Waters by ramming through two federal mining leases for Antofagasta’s Twin Metals Minnesota. These mineral leases were terminated in 2016 and cannot lawfully be resurrected and renewed. The Trump Administration's action follows their abrupt cancellation of a Forest Service study on the proposed 20-year ban on copper mining on Superior National Forest lands near the Boundary Waters. This is part of an effort to suppress science and economics. The Trump Administration scheme violates the public processes required for critical decision-making and precludes decisions based on the best available science and economics.

Minnesotans overwhelming (70%) oppose copper mining near the Boundary Waters.

More than 40 scientific and economic studies document the significant and long-lasting harm to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the surrounding Superior National Forest, and the Arrowhead region if copper mining were to occur in the headwaters of the Boundary Waters. In 2016 the Forest Service concluded that copper mining in the Wilderness watershed would be an unacceptable risk to the lakes, rivers, and wetlands of Boundary Waters and the Superior National Forest. An independent economic study documents that the region would generate dramatically more jobs and income over 20 years if copper mining were banned from the watershed of the Boundary Waters. Conversely the regional economy would be worse off with a Twin Metals mine.

We urge you to:

-Demand that the Forest Service complete the promised two-year study of a 20-year ban on copper mining in accordance with law

-Demand that the Trump Administration stop all efforts to renew or issue federal mineral leases of Superior National Forest lands in the watershed of the Boundary Waters

-Support permanent protection of the Boundary Waters by supporting a ban on sulfide-ore copper mining in the Boundary Waters watershed

Thank you for protecting the Boundary Waters for all Americans now and in the future. I look forward to hearing from you.
